atravessam.

The utopia of unlimited exploitation of space and the scenic enterprise of leisure’s
ritualization have been some of the references imposed by Western neoliberal hegemony in
Iberian urbanization. Behind the popular festive imaginary, the Mediterranean heritage of
mythological symbols and beliefs is experiencing a dialectical arena of reactivation and
disappearance. This research navigates the dissemination, correlation and analysis of the
networks that confine popular imaginaries to contemporary processes of urban
transformation. By comparing the symbolic use of ‘arraiais’ and ‘patios’ in the significant
changes that the tourism and real estate market has induced in the cities of late capitalism,
interactions between hegemonic and counter-hegemonic forces will be unveiled.
Subsequently, a reconceptualization of the classic dichotomies in the ambiguous space of
Lisbon and Cordova’s commodification processes is proposed throughout this investigation.
