Os missionários jesuítas desempenharam um papel muito importante na China moderna,
especialmente no que diz respeito às relações sino-estrangeiras modernas, sendo um veículo
importante para a compreensão das relações externas da China moderna. Contudo, por várias
razões, as particularidades deste grupo de jesuítas e o seu papel nas relações sino-estrangeiras
durante um período de quinhentos anos não receberam atenção suficiente por parte dos
estudiosos. Durante demasiado tempo, os jesuítas foram vistos como agentes da agressão
imperialista moderna na China. Este trabalho propõe com uma perspetiva muito diferente e
analisa mais profundamente o papel activo dos jesuítas na assinatura do Tratado de Nerchinsk
em 1689 e o seu significado histórico à luz deste tratado. Analisa-se, em particular, a
participação dos jesuítas liderados por Tomás Pereira ao longo de todo o processo.

The Jesuit missionaries played a very important role in modern China, especially in Modern
Sino-foreign relations. Their agency is of paramount importance for understanding the
Modern China's foreign relations. However, for various reasons, the specificity of this group
of Jesuits and their role in Sino-foreign relations over a period of five hundred years has not
received sufficient attention from scholars. For a long time, the Jesuits have been depicted as
the agents of modern imperialist aggression in China. This work follows very different
perspective and further analyzes the active role of the Jesuits in the signing of the Treaty of
Nerchinsk in 1689 and its historical meaning. It analyses, in particular, the participation of the
Jesuits led by Thomas Pereira throughout the process.
