Em consonância com as tendências observáveis em diversos países ocidentais, Portugal têm
testemunhado nas últimas décadas mutações demográficas consideráveis, mutações essas que
se têm expressado num envelhecimento acentuado da população portuguesa. Este cenário tem
conduzido a um enorme aumento do número de idosos, uma tendência que, de acordo com as
previsões do INE, se irá agravar nas próximas décadas. Deste modo, é essencial que as
diversas estruturas sociais e as suas organizações estejam capacitadas para atender aos
desafios que esta conjuntura incita. Entre estas instituições incluem-se os museus.
Considerando a relevância dos museus locais nas dinâmicas culturais locais e nacionais, o
tema desta dissertação é o impacto social dos museus locais na perspetiva dos públicos
seniores. Esta investigação procura responder à questão: De que forma podemos reforçar e
promover um maior impacto social dos museus locais junto dos públicos seniores? Pretende-
se, portanto, entender como poderão os museus locais reforçar o seu impacto social junto dos
públicos seniores.
A partir do estudo de três museus locais, e da utilização de uma estratégia metodológica
mista, bem como das dimensões referidas no CISOC, esta dissertação teve como objetivo
principal compreender que ações ou estratégias têm sido aplicadas por estes museus no
sentido de reforçar e incrementar o seu impacto social junto dos públicos seniores. Esta
investigação demonstrou o trabalho realizado pelos museus neste âmbito, bem como que os
museus têm sido capazes de fortalecer a sua relação com os públicos seniores e aumentar a
sua relevância no conjunto dos seus públicos.

In line with the demographic trends observed in several Western countries, Portugal has
witnessed considerable demographic changes in recent decades, changes that have been
expressed in an accentuated aging of the Portuguese population. This scenario has led to a
huge increase in the number of elderly people, a trend that, according to INE predictions, will
worsen in the coming decades. Therefore, it is essential that the various social structures and
their organizations are capable of responding to the challenges that this situation poses.
Among these institutions local museums are included.
Considering the relevance of local museums in local and national cultural dynamics, the
theme of this dissertation is the social impact of local museums from the perspective of senior
publics. This research will seek to answer the question: How can we strengthen and promote a
greater social impact of local museums among senior publics? The aim, therefore, is to
understand how local museums can reinforce their social impact among senior publics.
Based on the study of three local museums, and the use of a mixed methodological
strategy, as well as the dimensions mentioned in CISOC, this dissertation had as its main
objective to understand which actions or strategies have been applied by these museums in
order to strengthen and increase its social impact on senior audiences. This investigation
demonstrated the work carried out by museums in this area, as well as how museums have
been able to strengthen their relationship with senior audiences and increase their relevance
within their audiences as a whole.
