No entanto, o plástico é

The concern to make the world more sustainable, as a way to reduce environmental
pollution, has been studied and analyzed by several researchers since the 1990s. There is no
doubt that plastic plays an important role in everyday life, for being an accessible, hygienic
and high quality material. However, plastic is more than 90% fossil fuel and its lack of
degradability presents serious environmental problems (Banks et al., 2016). One of the
alternatives that have been studied and on which this study will focus is packaging that is said
to be sustainable, derived from renewable raw materials. In this sense, this study intends to
analyze what are the consumers' motivations that make them adhere to the purchase of products
in biodegradable packaging.
The sample had a total of 217 participants. After analyzing the data, it was possible to
conclude that the Perceived Response Effectiveness (ERP) influences an individual's
predisposition to buy a sustainable product, as well as the product's perceived environmental
value positively mediates the relationship between ERP and the intention to buy the product
(ITB). On the contrary, the results referring to the green self-identity did not show to be
consistent with the investigations carried out previously, thus there is no moderating role in the
relationship of ERP and the ITB the product. At the end of this study, the theoretical and
practical implications of the results for the implementation of strategies that encourage the
purchase of products in biodegradable packaging are discussed.
