Confrontados com as contínuas mudanças hodiernas em todas as esferas da vida social
em que estamos envolvidos, a família, na sua estrutura nuclear, tem-se ajustado e recriado.
Neste processo de interação e construções quotidianas, as diferentes gerações,
confrontam-se, organizam-se e contribuem com novos conteúdos.
A fragilidade humana, inerente a todo o ser humano nas diferentes fases da vida, é uma
realidade incontornável. As famílias confrontadas com esta condicionante, naturalmente,
reconfiguram-se.
O conceito de hospital tem as suas origens no vocábulo hospe: “hóspede” ou “visita”, do
qual resulta hospitalitas: “hospitalidade”. A visita é um aspeto fundamental na arte de
acolher e cuidar. Todos os intervenientes (médicos/ enfermeiros/ auxiliares/ doentes/
familiares) são protagonistas no processo de criar condições de hospitalidade.
O estudo, de natureza qualitativa, desenvolveu-se no Hospital Vila Franca de Xira, na
Unidade de Medicina Interna, através de entrevistas e conversas com doentes com o
intuito de compreender como interagem as diferentes gerações no processo de
acompanhar e cuidar da pessoa fragilizada.
Quem visita? Que sentimentos, emoções, valores são percebidos pelo doente durante o
seu internamento? Como se vivem e são percecionadas, a partir da hospitalização, as
relações familiares/ intergeracionais?
As respostas dadas pela família, nas diferentes gerações que a compõem, estão muito
dependentes de fatores externos e internos que condicionam a forma e o modo como esta
acompanha e cuida da pessoa hospitalizada.
Existe um longo caminho a construir para proporcionar hospitalidade, neste processo em
que o ser humano é confrontado com a fragilidade.

Faced with continuous changes in all spheres of social life in which we are involved, the
family in its nuclear structure has adjusted and reformed itself with the changes. In this
process of daily interactions and developments, different generations, confront, organize
themselves and contribute with new contents in this construction.
The human frailty inherent in every human being, in the different phases of life, is an
unavoidable reality, and families faced with this condition naturally form new
reconfigurations.
The concept of hospital has its origin in the word hospe: "guest" or "visitor" of which
results hospitalitas: "hospitality". Visit is a fundamental aspect in the art of welcoming
and caring. Thus, all the participants (nurses / patients / relatives), are protagonists in this
process of creating conditions of hospitality.
The qualitative study was carried out at Vila Franca de Xira Hospital, in the Internal
Medicine Unit, through interviews and dialogues with patients in order to understand how
different generations interact in the process of accompanying and caring for the fragile
person.
Who visits? What feelings, emotions, values are perceived by the patient during his
hospitalization. How are family or intergenerational relationships lived and perceived
from hospitalization?
The responses given by the family in the different generations that comprise it, are very
dependent on external and internal factors that determine the form and manner of
accompanying and caring for the hospitalized person.
There is a long way to build in order to provide hospitality, in this process in which human
being is met with fragility.
