Considerando a expansão do ensino profissional em Portugal nos últimos anos,
pretende-se, nesta investigação realizada em 8 Escolas Profissionais do distrito de Santarém,
por um lado, conhecer a origem social e desempenho escolar dos estudantes e, por outro lado,
compreender as suas escolhas e expectativas escolares e profissionais, isto é, perceber se o
ensino profissional se constitui como última escolha a que acedem os “excluídos” dos
percursos nobres do sistema de ensino. A análise da informação recolhida permitiu identificar
que a maioria dos alunos é oriunda de famílias de capital cultural e económico baixos e com
percursos escolares marcados por várias retenções. As escolhas estão relacionadas com uma
melhor preparação para a entrada no mercado de trabalho e as aspirações futuras orientam-se,
também, para a inserção na vida activa, existindo, no entanto, uma parte significativa de
alunos que aspira prosseguir estudos.

Considering the expansion of the vocational education in Portugal in the recent years,
with this investigation conducted in eight schools of the District of Santarém, we aim to know
not only the social background and school performance of those students but also to
understand their choices and expectations in what concerns school and vocation, it means, to
realise if the vocational education is viewed as the last choice for the "excluded" from the
noble paths of the educational system. A deeper analysis of the collected information allowed
us to identify that most students come from households whose cultured and economical
backgrounds are low as well as their school life is marked by several failures. Both their
choices and future expectations are related to the working life. However, we can also notice
there is a significant part of students who wish to continue their studies.
