A crescente preocupação com as questões relacionadas com a sustentabilidade, a par do
estabelecimento de metas europeias a cumprir pelos sistemas de gestão de resíduos, tem
levado as entidades responsáveis pela recolha dos resíduos a estudarem novas alternativas
à configuração atual dos seus sistemas.
Esta problemática, associada à elevada ineficiência deste tipo de sistemas, levou ao estudo
da reconfiguração da rede logística da Valorsul, empresa responsável pela recolha de
resíduos recicláveis na zona Oeste. A rede logística atual é baseada num único depósito
e propõe-se a utilização das estações de transferência já existentes como novos depósitos.
Para além de introduzir novos depósitos na rede logística, foi estudada também uma
alteração à tipologia das rotas de recolha a realizar, ou seja, realizar simultaneamente
rotas abertas (rotas que começam num depósito e terminam num depósito diferente) e
fechadas (rotas que iniciam e têm fim no mesmo depósito).
Os resultados permitiram concluir que, para a recolha de papel/cartão, é possível reduzir
em 47% a quilometragem percorrida pelos veículos, bem como diminuir em 9,5% o
tempo efetuado por estes no período de um mês. Estes resultados têm impacto nos custos,
ao permitir poupar consideravelmente nas horas pagas aos colaboradores.

The growing concern with issues related to sustainability, alongside to the establishment
of European targets that have to be met by waste management systems, has led the
authorities responsible for the collection of waste to consider new alternatives to the
current configuration of their systems.
This problem led to the study of the reconfiguration of Valorsul’s logistics network, the
one responsible for the collection of recyclable waste in the western zone of Portugal.
The current logistics network is based on a single depot and in this study it is proposed
the use of existing transfer stations as new depots. In addition, it is also studied a change
in the type of collection of routes to perform, i.e., do simultaneously open routes (routes
that start in a depot and end on a different one) and closed routes (routes that begin and
end in the same depot).
The results showed that, for the collection of paper/cardboard, it is possible to reduce by
47% the mileage traveled by vehicles, and decrease by 9.5% the time made by them.
These results have an impact on costs, in a way that it is possible to save considerably in
hours paid to employees.
