A dissertação pretende identificar as perceções e práticas envolvidas no setor do arroz no Vale do Tejo e Sorraia relativas à segurança alimentar e sustentabilidade ambiental, pretendendo contribuir para o desenvolvimento sustentável do setor. A partir de um estudo de caso com recolha de informação através de visitas à região, foram realizados inquéritos por entrevista a orizicultores, industriais do arroz, associações socioprofissionais e investigadores de melhoramento genético em arroz. Constatou-se ser um setor com preocupações de segurança alimentar e inquietações ambientais, ainda que estas possam estar alavancadas por incentivos financeiros decorrentes das políticas agrícolas e de desenvolvimento rural. O cultivo do arroz no Vale do Tejo e Sorraia, em modo de Produção Integrada, contribui para a manutenção dos orizicultores e indústrias da região, protegendo a natureza e biodiversidade e assegurando a segurança alimentar

The purpose of this dissertation is to identify the perceptions and practices within the rice sector in the Vale do Tejo e Sorraia regarding to food safety and food security and environmental sustainability of the sector. It was conducted a case study in which it was collected information while visiting the region and performed intervews to various actors such as the rice farmers, the rice manufacturing industry, the socio-professional associations and the researchers workings to genetically improves the rice. It was found that the sector is one with food security, food safety and environmental concerns althought these are leveraged by finantial incentives in the context of the agricultural politics and rural development. The rice cultivation on the Vale do Tejo e Sorraia in an integrated production system contributes to the support of rice farmers and maintain the industries of the region and also to the protection of the environment and biodiversity, assuring food security
