As mudanças sociais e económicas que se têm vindo a verificar nas últimas décadas tiveram um profundo impacto no domínio das relações familiares, nomeadamente na forma como o pai e a mãe percebem o seu papel e nas relações trabalho-família (Tamis-LeMonda, & Cabrera, 2008). O domínio da paternidade e o modo como o pai se envolve na vida familiar foi despertando interesse do ponto de vista dos investigadores e da sociedade em geral (Schoppe-Sullivan, McBride, & Ho, 2004). A presente investigação teve como objetivo analisar, numa amostra de 43 famílias nucleares portuguesas, as relações entre o envolvimento paterno em atividades de Cuidados e Socialização, (na perspetiva das mães) e as crenças maternas sobre o papel do pai. Os resultados obtidos indicam que as mães percecionam o papel do pai de modo não tradicional. No que se refere ao envolvimento do pai nas atividades de cuidados e socialização, a mãe considera que é ela quem “mais frequentemente” assume as tarefas de cuidados diretos e indiretos à criança, contrariamente às tarefas de ensino/disciplina, lazer no exterior e brincadeira, onde a mãe indica existir uma partilha mais igualitária entre ela e o pai. O envolvimento paterno parece estar associado com as habilitações literárias parentais e com o número de horas de trabalho dos pais. Na perspetiva da mãe, o pai participa mais em tarefas de cuidados diretos quando o filho é rapaz. O nível de participação do pai não está relacionado com as crenças que a mãe tem sobre o papel do pai.

The social and economic changes occurring during the past decades have had a huge impact in the family dynamics, particularly in the way fathers and mothers understand their roles and responsibilities in the family and in the work-family relations (Tamis-LeMonda & Cabrera, 2008). ). The domain of fatherhood and how father was involved in family life was arousing interest from the point of view of researchers and society in general (Schoppe-Sullivan, McBride & M., 2004). The goal of this research was to analyze a sample of 43 Portuguese families, the relationship between father involvement in care activities and socialization for children, (from the perspective of mothers) and maternal beliefs about role of the father. The results show that mothers agree that father takes a non-traditional role in relation to the child. Regarding the involvement of the father in the care and socialization activities, mother believes that it is she who "more often" assumes the direct and indirect care tasks to the child, contrary to the teaching tasks / discipline, leisure outside and plays, where mother indicates there is a more equal sharing between her and her father. Father involvement appears to be associated with parental education level and the number of hours parents work. In mother's perspective, the father is more involved in direct care tasks when the child is a boy. The level of father involvement is not related to the beliefs that the mother has about father’s role.
