O trabalho de investigação resulta de uma pesquisa feita no âmbito do Mestrado em Serviço Social,
cuja problemática de investigação foi a Violência Doméstica na Ilha da Madeira.
Ao realizar este estudo pretendíamos conhecer melhor o problema da violência doméstica na
Ilha da Madeira e conhecer também a história de vida das mulheres vítimas de violência doméstica
que se encontravam na Casa Abrigo São Francisco.
Para recolher a informação elaboramos uma entrevista semi-estruturada que foi aplicada às
mulheres vítimas de violência doméstica que se encontravam na Casa Abrigo São Francisco e uma
entrevista aprofundada dirigida para a respectiva Responsável Técnica da Casa Abrigo.
Ao realizar as entrevistas concluímos que as mulheres foram vítimas de violência física,
psicológica, sexual e económica. Os filhos das mulheres não só presenciavam os maus-tratos como
também eram maltratados.
O elevado risco que as mulheres corriam ao viver com o agressor e a pouca ou nenhuma
rectaguarda familiar foram factores preponderantes para que fossem acolhidas na Casa Abrigo São
Francisco.

The investigation work results from a research that was made in the scope of the Social Service
Masters, whose problematic research was the domestic violence in Madeira Island.
In conducting this study we wanted to better understand the problem of domestic violence on
the Island of Madeira, and also know the life story of women who are victims of domestic violence
and that are in the Shelter Home São Francisco.
To collect the information, we put together a semi -structured interview that was applied to
women victims of domestic violence who are in the Shelter Home São Francisco, and directed an in
depth interview to the Head of the Technical Shelter Home.
When conducting the interview we concluded that women were victims of physical,
psychological, sexual and economical violence. The children of these women not only witnessed the
abuse, but were also mistreated.
The high risk that women are living in with the offender and little or no rear family support,
were important factors to be taken up by the Shelter House São Francisco.
