As actividades desportivas têm acompanhado a evolução das sociedades, assumindo nestas um papel relevante ao longo dos tempos.
A presente dissertação inscreve-se na área da Sociologia do desporto. O trabalho pretende analisar as representações sociais do Rugby na Grande Lisboa e tem como objectivo compreender o campo de práticas da modalidade. A zona de Lisboa, devido à presença acentuada da modalidade, estabelece características excepcionais para a abordagem à problemática.
A investigação aborda quatro aspectos chave para o tema em questão: o perfil social dos atletas; as questões de género na modalidade; as razões dos atletas para a prática do rugby e o impacto deste na identidade dos atletas. Com a análise destes quatro elementos, pretende-se uma aproximação científica à modalidade, no sentido de traçar um quadro próximo do seu contexto social. O interesse científico do trabalho pelo rugby deve-se, essencialmente, às suas características singulares e à sua reduzida popularidade na sociedade.

Sporting activities have accompanied the evolution of societies and over the centuries have assumed a key role.
This thesis comes within the area of the Sociology of sport. It aims to analyze the social representations of rugby in Greater Lisbon and to shed light on the different practices of this sport. The Lisbon region stands out for its large number of rugby players and therefore has the ideal characteristics for such a study.
The research addresses four key aspects: the social profile of the athletes; the gender question; the reasons for athletes playing rugby, and its impact on the athletes’ identity. The analysis of these four questions seeks to further scientific knowledge about the sport by depicting a framework indicative of its social context. The scientific interest of this study of rugby is due predominantly to its unique characteristics and its limited popularity in society.
