O presente trabalho consiste no projeto da Biblioteca Municipal de Benfica,
designado Maria Teresa Horta, e parte do tema “A arquitetura para além da
pele”, que propõe compreender o edifício como um organismo composto por
camadas interdependentes - Epiderme, Derme e Hipoderme - correspondentes,
respetivamente, à envolvente, ao programa e à estrutura. A proposta procura
contrariar a monumentalidade dos edifícios institucionais do contexto,
promovendo a integração subtil na topografia e estabelecendo uma relação
direta com a paisagem.
A Epiderme manifesta-se como o manto de vegetação que cobre o lote e a
cobertura ajardinada, numa simbiose entre o edifício e a envolvente. A Derme
traduz o programa interior, definido por uma organização flexível que permite
múltiplas configurações e adaptações de uso, assegurando a sustentabilidade e a
longevidade do espaço público. Já a Hipoderme representa o sistema estrutural
do conjunto, combinando betão armado, aço e vidro, que funcionam como
suporte físico e simbólico da arquitetura.
Mais do que um edifício, a biblioteca propõe uma arquitetura que se funde com
o lugar, promovendo a continuidade entre interior e exterior, matéria e paisagem.
O trabalho reflete ainda sobre o processo de projeto enquanto instrumento de
experimentação, crítica e síntese entre pensar e fazer arquitetura. Assim, a pele
que inspira o projeto, revela-se permeável, viva e em constante transformação.

The present work consists of the design project for the Benfica Municipal Library,
named Maria Teresa Horta, and is based on the theme “Architecture Beyond
the Skin”, which seeks to understand the building as an organism composed
of interdependent layers - Epidermis, Dermis, and Hypodermis - corresponding
respectively to the envelope, the program, and the structure. The proposal aims
to challenge the monumentality of the surrounding institutional buildings,
promoting a subtle integration within the topography and establishing a direct
relationship with the landscape.
The Epidermis is expressed as the vegetation mantle that covers the site and the
green roof, creating a symbiosis between the building and its surroundings. The
Dermis represents the interior program, defined by a flexible organization that
allows multiple configurations and uses, ensuring the sustainability and longevity
of the public space. The Hypodermis, in turn, defines the structural system of the
ensemble, combining reinforced concrete, steel, and glass, which function as the
physical and symbolic support of architecture.
More than a building, the library proposes an architecture that merges with
the place, promoting continuity between interior and exterior, matter and
landscape. The dissertation also reflects on the design process as an instrument
of experimentation, critique, and synthesis between thinking and making
architecture. Thus, the skin that inspires the project reveals itself as permeable,
alive, and in constant transformation.
