O presente estudo procura entender a experiência vivida dum conjunto de membros
da comunidade muçulmana sunita que migrou para Portugal de Moçambique, observando-se da
forma como a memória dessa vivência é preservada e recriada através de vários registos,
nomeadamente a gastronomia elementos da cultura material. O objetivo é não só explicar o
potencial destes diversos registos elicitarem memória mas igualmente demonstrar os valores,
práticas culturais e estruturas sociais na sociedade colonial que transparecem no relato de tais
memórias.

The current study seeks to understand the lived experience of a selection of members
of the Sunni Muslim community that migrated from Portugal to Mozambique, observing ways in
which the memory of that lived experience has been preserved and recreated through a variety
of registers, namely gastronomy and elements of material culture. The aim is to explain not only
the potential these different registers have to elicit memory, but also to demonstrate the values,
cultural practices and social structures in colonial society reflected in the re-telling of such
memories.
