A presente dissertação preenche uma lacuna na pesquisa académica e científica, focando a perspetiva das b-girls no breaking em Portugal, um estilo de dança da cultura hip-hop. O estudo investiga as perceções, experiências, práticas e discursos das b-girls no contexto breaking, explorando questões de género e o impacto das representações mediáticas. Os meios de comunicação social foram uns dos responsáveis pela criação da perceção generalizada de que o breaking e a cultura hip-hop são predominantemente centrados nos homens, destacando figuras masculinas e minimizando a presença e as contribuições das mulheres. A pesquisa baseia-se nos contributos das entrevistas com sete b-girls, revelando desafios relacionados com estereótipos de género, pressões relacionadas com a imagem corporal e a sexualização. As conclusões evidenciam a influência das representações mediáticas na persistência de estereótipos e desigualdades de género e revelam como estas questões transcendem o breaking, refletindo preconceitos e ideias mais amplas da sociedade em geral. Neste sentido, a nova classificação do breaking como desporto e modalidade olímpica, tem contribuído positivamente para o destaque do trabalho de b-girls portuguesas, assim como as tecnologias digitais e as redes sociais online, apesar dos desafios e dilemas, possibilitam uma representação mais equilibrada de género.

This dissertation fills a gap in academic and scientific research by focusing on the perspective of b-girls in the context of breaking in Portugal, a dance style within hip-hop culture. The study investigates the perceptions, experiences, practices, and discourses of b-girls in the realm of breaking, delving into gender issues and the impact of media representations. The mainstream media have also been responsible for creating the widespread perception that breaking and hip-hop culture predominantly revolve around men, emphasizing male figures and downplaying the presence and contributions of women. The research is based on contributions from interviews with seven b-girls, revealing challenges related to gender stereotypes, body image pressures, and sexualization. The findings highlight the influence of media representations on the persistence of gender stereotypes and inequalities, illustrating how these issues extend beyond the realm of breaking, reflecting broader societal biases and ideas. In this regard, the recent classification of breaking as an olympic sport has positively contributed to the recognition of portuguese b-girls’ work, and digital technologies and social media, despite the challenges and dilemmas, enable a more balanced gender representation.
