O objetivo deste estudo foi explorar, junto de uma população com diagnóstico no âmbito da
doença mental, qual a perceção relativamente ao estigma associado à sua doença, e que
influência esse estigma exerce na sua competência de assertividade. Em particular, neste estudo,
procurámos ainda explorar os fatores de risco e proteção que determinam a existência desta
relação e o interesse potencial de participação num programa de intervenção nesta área.
Foi realizado um estudo qualitativo, através da aplicação de 22 entrevistas
semiestruturadas, e as respostas foram analisadas de acordo com a metodologia de análise
temática. Com base no modelo teórico de processo construído a partir da revisão de literatura e
das entrevistas foi possível identificar os fatores que deverão estar presentes numa intervenção
neste domínio. Os resultados revelaram a perceção de atitudes estigmatizantes relativamente à
doença mental, com influência na competência de assertividade. Estes resultados são discutidos
à luz da literatura neste domínio.

This study aimed to explore, among a population diagnosed with mental illness, their perception
of the stigma associated with it and what influence this stigma has on their assertiveness
competence. We also sought to explore the risk and protection factors that determine the
existence of this relationship and the potential interest in participating in an intervention
program in this area.
A qualitative study was carried out through the application of 22 semi-structured
interviews, that were analyzed through a thematic analysis methodology. Based on the
theoretical process model built from the literature review and interviews, it was possible to
identify the factors that must be present in an intervention in this domain. The results revealed
the perception of stigmatizing attitudes towards mental illness, influencing assertiveness
competence. These results are discussed in light of the literature in this area.
