Atualmente o turismo apresenta-se um setor altamente competitivo, conquistando espaço e
importância na economia, sendo uma fonte importante de receita externa principalmente para
os países menos desenvolvidos. Em Cabo Verde, o turismo tem sido alvo de discussão por
parte dos decisores políticos, uma vez que a atividade tem somado efeitos macroeconómicos
importantes e se assumido como o principal sector desta pequena economia aberta.
Este trabalho, elegido "impacto do crescimento do setor do turismo no bem-estar social: o
caso de Cabo Verde" visa estudar o desenvolvimento do turismo em Cabo Verde, procurando
identificar se tem sido acompanhado pelo aumento do bem-estar social da população Caboverdiana. Com esse objetivo calculou-se um índice de bem-estar e analisou-se a sua evolução
nos últimos anos.
O estudo permitiu verificar que o setor turístico se tem acentuado visivelmente a partir do ano
2000, assumindo cada vez mais um papel decisivo no crescimento da economia Caboverdiana, permitindo melhorias nas condições de vida das populações. Entre 2000 e 2016, um
período de forte expansão do turismo, o índice de bem-estar da população aumentou
significativamente, com melhorias significativas a nível dos domínios da educação, do bemestar económico, da água, saneamento e energia, da saúde e da vulnerabilidade económica.

Currently tourism is a highly competitive sector, gaining space and importance in the
economy, being an important source of external revenue source mainly for the least
developed countries. In Cape Verde, tourism has been the subject of discussion by policy
makers, since the activity has added important macroeconomic effects and assumed itself as
the main sector of this small open economy.
This work, entitled "Impact of the growth of the tourism sector on social welfare: the case of
Cape Verde" aims to study if the development of tourism in Cape Verde, seeking to identify
whether it has been accompanied by the increase of the social welfare of the Cape Verdean
population. With this objective a welfare index was calculated and its evolution was analyzed
in recent years.
The study made it possible to verify that the tourism sector has become more marked since
the year 2000, assuming an increasingly decisive role in the growth of the Cape Verdean
economy, allowing improvements in the living conditions of the populations. Between 2000
and 2016, a period of strong expansion of tourism, the population welfare rate has increased
significantly, with significant improvements in the fields of education, economic well-being,
water, sanitation and energy, health and economic vulnerability.
