Estudar as dinâmicas em torno da mobilidade por bicicletas em África é uma forma de se
compreender processos importantes, além de permitir uma observação e análise dos desafios e
oportunidades de desenvolvimento econômico e social em regiões deprimidas, nas quais o
veículo de propulsão humana pode significar acesso à serviços essenciais. O presente estudo,
através de uma revisão de literatura, apresenta os autores que teorizam e investigam a
mobilidade por bicicletas no contexto africano, levando em conta as particularidades
históricas, culturais, políticas, geográficas e econômicas deste veículo e seus impactes
positivos e negativos nas comunidades em que seu uso é frequente, bem como os desafios e
barreiras para a massificação de seu uso. Tal análise também percorre as teorias sobre a
evolução tecnológica dos artefatos a fim de compreender a aceitação e incorporação ou não de
inovações em sistemas sociais. Através do tema da tecnologia frugal é possível perceber como
a adaptação da bicicleta pode acontecer visando a resolução de problemas que vão além da
questão da mobilidade. Neste percurso, ficam demonstradas quais as dinâmicas sociais,
econômicas, históricas e culturais que limitam e/ou impedem a difusão e massificação da
NMT em África. Também é possível perceber a correlação e os efeitos da interpretação e dos
significados simbólicos sobre o uso deste veículo no continente. A conclusão a que se chega é
a de que a bicicleta é uma tecnologia de transporte adequada e eficiente e, dadas as condições
essenciais, pode ser usada amplamente em África promovendo o desenvolvimento econômico
e social.

Studying the dynamics around bicycle mobility in Africa is a way of understanding
important processes, as well as allowing observation and analysis of the challenges and
opportunities for economic and social development in depressed regions in which the human
propulsion vehicle can mean access to essential services. The present study, through a
literature review, presents the authors who theorize and investigate bicycle mobility in the
African context, taking into account the historical, cultural, political, geographic and
economic peculiarities of this vehicle and its positive and negative impacts on the
communities in which its use is frequent, as well as the challenges and barrier to the
massification of its use. This analysis also covers theories about the technological evolution of
artifacts in order to understand the acceptance and incorporation of innovations in social
systems. Through the theme of frugal technology it is possible to see how the adaptation of
the bicycle can happen aiming at solving problems that go beyond the question of mobility. In
this course, the social, economic, historical and cultural dynamics that limit and/or impede the
diffusion and massification of NMT in Africa are demonstrated. It is also possible to see the
correlation and effects of interpretation and symbolic meanings on the use of this vehicle on
the continent. The conclusion reached is that cycling is an adequate and efficient
transportation technology and, given the essential conditions, can be widely used in Africa by
promoting economic and social development
