Esta dissertação tem por título: Associativismo Social Ferroviário em Portugal: Mutualismo, Previdência e Proteccionismo, 1866-1955, é no âmbito da História Moderna e Contemporânea, na vertente Cidades e Património. Embora longo, o período estudado justifica-se pelo facto de abranger toda a evolução do movimento associativo ferroviário, de cariz social, desde a data em que os trabalhadores passaram a estar abrangidos pela primeira caixa de previdência ferroviária – Caixa de Socorros – instituída em 1872 pela Companhia Real dos Caminhos de Ferro Portugueses, até à unificação das várias ferroviárias existentes, na Caixa de Previdência dos Ferroviários Portugueses, em 1955. Pretende-se que esta dissertação seja um contributo para a história social contemporânea, através do estudo das estruturas sociais ferroviárias, quer as pertencentes ao movimento associativo em geral (cooperativas, associações mutuárias e de classe), quer as do paternalismo patronal e/ou estatal (caixas de pensões e reformas ou de previdência), com especial destaque para estas. Sendo ambas associações sociais, diferem entre si pelo facto de as primeiras serem criadas e geridas pelos associados, enquanto as segundas eram instituídas pelas empresas, com a contribuição dos trabalhadores. Com o Corporativismo umas e outras passaram a ser controladas directamente pelo Estado através de legislação instituições e próprias. Sendo uma matéria importante não tem merecido, contudo, muita atenção dos historiadores. É, portanto, objectivo desta dissertação trazer ao conhecimento público as condições de vida e trabalho dos ferroviários e suas famílias, assim como a protecção social proporcionadas pelas mutuárias e caixas de previdência ferroviárias existentes em Portugal, para a qual foi imprescindível o acesso a importantes fontes, obtidas em Bibliotecas, Arquivos Históricos e Centros de Documentação da especialidade.

In the context of the Morden and Contemporary History, in part of Cities and Heritage, this dissertation with the title Social Railroad Associations; Mutualism, Foresight and Protectionism, intends to be a contribute to the social contemporary history, through the study of the social railroad structures, both the, belong to the general associative movement (cooperatives, borrowers and class associations) or the, mixed associative paternalism (pension funds and reforms) even, state paternalism or state welfare. This dissertation aims to provide a historic reference to all railroad borrowers’ associations and Insurance scheme’s existing in Portugal. Being both social associations, they differed among themselves in the fact the first have been created and management by the members, while the second was instituted by the company’s with the workers contribution. With the Corporatism, both became state-controlled. The studied period covers all the evolution of the social railroad associative movement, since the foundation of the Aid Fund to Portuguese Employee’s of Railways Royal Company until to the unification of all existing Funds, in the Portuguese Railroader Insurance scheme, at 1955. Being an important matter it has not been worthy, nevertheless, much attention of the historians. It is, so, I aim of this dissertation to bring to the public knowledge the conditions of life and work of the railroad workers and his families, as well as the social protection provided by the borrowers and railroad boxes of foresight existent in Portugal. This dissertation would not have been possible without the access to important fountains obtained in Libraries, Historical Archives and Centers of Documentation of the specialty.
