This dissertation is the outcome of an ethnographic work on the "Auto da Floripes", a popular theatre and a cultural ex-libris from "Alto Minho" which is a narrative about a battle between Moors and Christians. The popular performance takes place every year on 5th August and it is part of the festivities devoted to "Nossa Senhora das Neves" (Our Lady of Snow). With this research, I intend to revisit the place where Paulo Raposo, my supervisor, carried out fieldwork for his PhD thesis (1998), and thus follow the performance as a ritual, analysing it and evaluating its the implications for the local society. The religious conflict between Christians and Moors, the acknowledgement of what differentiates us and the "others", seem to permeate the fourth wall of the stage, where the performance takes place and interacts with the social skils of the participants coming from the three corners of the "Lugar das Neves". Questions about the territory, identities and social behaviour, or religious morals, can be understood as a mutual interaction between arts and life, which impact on each other. In this clearly marked beat, in order for the participants not to stray away from the rehearsed performance, we observe a ritual of initiation of the young men that support them to build their self, and imparts the ethos of belonging to "Lugar das Neves". The construction of the image of who is this "other" questions life experiences and, ultimately, who we really are.
