The 'Advanced Computer Architecture' talk, scheduled for December 11 at ISCTE-IUL, is attended by Gabriel Loh, specialist in the field of Exascale systems development. The growing challenges in this scientific field require a look at new developments and challenges. Gabriel H. Loh seeks to show the potential of AMD technologies, and how an Exascale system can be built, that is, the basis for a supercomputer.

Maurício Breternitz, an ISTAR-IUL researcher, explains to us what challenges lie behind such a technology and its potential.

What’s the state of the art, challenges and impact of Exascale computing to our daily lives, economic competitiveness, security issues, etc? And in scientific research?

M.B.  There is a growing number of problems where experiments are impossible, dangerous, or inordinately costly, where extreme-scale computing will enable the solution of vastly more accurate predictive models and the analysis of massive quantities of data, producing quantum advances in areas of science and technology.  For example, exascale computing will push the frontiers of:

  • Adaptation to regional climate changes such as sea level rise, drought and flooding, and severe weather patterns;
  • Reduction of the carbon footprint of the transportation sector;
  • Efficiency and safety of the nuclear energy sector;
  • Innovative designs for cost-effective renewable energy resources such as batteries, catalysts, and  biofuels;
  • Reverse engineering of the human brain;
  • Design, control and manufacture of advanced materials;
  • Increased economic competitiveness as companies accelerate development of superior new products and spur creativity arising from modeling and simulation at unprecedented speed and fidelity.

 

To whom may this talk be of interest?

M.B. This talk intends to provide an overview of the state of the art of extreme scale computing, motivated by applications, and describe current research and development activities undergoing at leading manufacturers, as well as to introduce researchers to key remaining challenges.
