Inaugurated in 1998, the Master's Degree in Communication, Culture, and Information Technology (MCCTI) gives students the theoretical and practical background they need for future academic research and professional work in various areas of communication intersecting with information technology and culture.

This innovative master's program was designed for students interested in communication and culture. The primary areas of study are Communication Sciences, Sociology, Cultural Studies, Political Science and Public Policy, Management, and Marketing.

It provides a solid foundation in critical areas such as social media, journalism, mass media, politics, government, public relations, and various creative industries, among others, by adopting a multidisciplinary approach with a strong focus on scientific research.

The course is aimed at first-year graduates w[1] ith backgrounds in Social Sciences,  Communication Sciences, and Humanities, such as Sociology, Anthropology, Economics, Advertising, Marketing, Cultural Studies, Literary Studies, and Fine Arts or for professionals in these fields.

The master's program combines various themes: network communication, Web 2.0, creative industries, media and journalism, political communication and public opinion, media regulation and policies, communication and social innovation, cultural intervention, and management.

As the MMCTI program covers a wide range of topics, students will pick from four thematic areas of concentration in the field of communication:

  • Social Media Communication and the Internet
  • Culture and Creative Industries
  • Communication and Politics
  • Media and Journalism (Available as optional electives for AY  2023-2024)

These four options allow one to deepen one´s knowledge in communication and culture by attending optional electives at Iscte chosen by the student, allowing them to personalize and build their own curriculum.

The faculty is comprised of Iscte professors and international lecturers renowned for their extensive research and professional experience in their distinctive areas. They seek to provide an environment for students and faculty to engage in critical thinking and reflection for students and faculty.

In addition to learning with our highly-qualified instructors, students will be able to access the course's growing network of institutional partnerships to participate in internships with companies in the communications and public relations sector as a means of introducing them into the labor market and applying their knowledge.

In terms of academic research, the course maintains a close relationship with various research centers that integrate researchers who produce cutting-edge research in innovation, such as the Center for Research and Studies in Sociology (CIES-IUL), Communication Observatory (OberCom)), MediaLab CIES_Iscte, and the Portuguese Observatory of Cultural Activities (OPAC). These organizations may serve as an interface for cooperation and help students with their own research projects or integrate them into conducting research at the research centers.

In terms of mobility programs, students can attend foreign universities through Erasmus exchange programs with established protocols – more information is available through the  International Relations Unit (IRO).

Merit Scholarship Awards are available to admitted candidates with the highest grades from their previous program.

Students who complete the first year are awarded the Diploma in Postgraduate Studies in Communication, Culture, and Information Technologies with 60 credits (ECTS).
