Welcome to the School of Sociology and Public Policies (ESPP).

The ESPP includes scientific areas that were pioneer in the formation of ISCTE-IUL and that have been pivotal in the development of Social Sciences in Portugal. The School has around 2000 students and includes 4 departments – Sociology, Political Science and Public Policies, History and Social Research Methods – and two research centers, the Centre for Research and Studies in Sociology (CIES-IUL)  and the Centre for International Studies (CEI-IUL).

The School offers four bachelor level programs in Sociology, Political Science, Modern and Contemporary History and Social Work, with an optional branch in Public Policies. It also offers more than 30 postgraduate programs in all these areas as well as in Public Administration, Communication, Cultural Studies, African Studies, International Studies and Social Research Methods, training over 40% of all PhD students of ISCTE-IUL.

Research activities take place at CIES-IUL in the areas of Sociology, Public Policies, Political Science, Communication Sciences, Urban Studies and Social Work and  at CEI-IUL, a multidisciplinary center, in its regional focus areas: Africa, Asia, Europe and Transatlantic Relations.

The work we develop has a strong focus on the scientific and pedagogical quality of our programs, the linkage between teaching and research activities and a permanent relation to society. We contribute to the training and qualification of professionals who are able to analyze, understand and intervene knowledgably in major challenges and problems of contemporary societies.
