The Department of Social Research Methods - one of the newest at Iscte - University Institute of Lisbon – is part of the School of Sociology and Public Policy (ESPP). This Department covers three scientific fields: Social Research Methods, Statistics and Data Analysis applied to the Social Sciences and Demography.

Thus, the Department assumes responsibility for the management of all the courses related to these fields, which are included in:

  • the undergraduate programmes in the Departments of Sociology, Political Science and History
  • the Master's programmes in the Department of Sociology.

The Department of Social Research Methods is also in charge of the Statistics and Data Analysis courses in the undergraduate and Master's programmes of the Department of Psychology. It furthermore collaborates with the Department of Anthropology in the course Field Research, and coordinates both the postgraduate programme in Data Analysis in Social Sciences and the specialization course in Computer-Assisted Content Analysis.

The numerous courses organized by the Department of Social Research Methods aim at developing skills in the following areas: statistics and data analysis, extensive and intensive research methods and techniques, qualitative methodologies, demography, field research, and indicators and statistical sources.

The faculty consists mostly of sociologists with extensive experience in teaching and research, which is reflected in their various national and international scientific publications. Their expertise contributes significantly to the connection between theory and practice in their classes on different quantitative and qualitative methodologies, which are presented in the context of real research, thus strengthening not only the relevance of the syllabi of the courses coordinated by the Department, but also the quality of research produced by the teachers.
