Ethics Committee

The Ethics Committee of Iscte is an advisory body of the Rector on ethical issues concerning the activity of Iscte in the areas of teaching, scientific research, provision of services to the community and operation of the institution. The term of office of its members lasts three years.

Pursuant to number 1 of Article 5 of the Regulation of the Ethics Committee of Iscte, Order number 7095/2011, published in Diário da República number 90, of 10 May 2011, by Order of the Rector of Iscte, number 64/2017 of 23 October 2017, the following Ethics Committee was appointed for a 3-year term of office:

  • Chairman: Professor Doctor Jorge Costa Santos
  • Member: Doctor Sónia Gomes da Costa Figueira Bernardes
  • Member: Doctor Vitor Manuel Basto Fernandes

Duties of the Ethics Committee

1. The general duties of the Ethics Committee involve:

  • Proposing to the Rector policies for Iscte on ethics in the context of teaching, scientific research and provision of services to the community;
  • Issue opinions to the Rector on ethical problems raised in Iscte’s activity in the areas of teaching, scientific research and provision of services to the community.

2. The Ethics Committee is specifically responsible for preparing proposals, recommendations and opinions on issues of ethics in research concerning:

  • The involvement of human beings in research projects, in a direct from as research objects or in an indirect form, but also able to affect them;
  • The respect for informed consent;
  • The protection of privacy and personal data;
  • The protection of persons that are especially vulnerable;
  • The use of animals in research projects.

3. The Ethics Committee is responsible for expressing an opinion, in coordination with the Pedagogical Council, on ethical matters relative to teaching, namely in the areas of copyright and plagiarism.

4. The specific duties of the Ethics Committee also entail preparing recommendations and issuing opinions on the application, in Iscte’s activities, of the codes of conduct of the professions and the statements and guidelines, both national and international, on ethics and bioethics.
